ADVANCE DIRECTIVE

An advance directive tells your doctor what kind of care you would like to have if you become unable to make medical decisions (if you are in a coma, for example). If you are admitted to HRH Community Hospital, our staff will talk to you about advance directives. The directives describe what kind of care you want if you have an illness that you are unlikely to recover from or if you are permanently unconscious. Advance directives tell your doctor that you don't want certain kinds of treatment.

DEATH WITH DIGNITY ACT

The Washington State Death with Dignity Act, passed in 2008, allows terminally ill adults diagnosed with six months or less to live the option to obtain a prescription for life-ending medication. This law was enacted following a public referendum, Initiative 1000, which reflected public support for the right to choose a dignified and controlled end-of-life process. To qualify, patients must be Washington residents, capable of making and communicating health care decisions. They must have two doctors confirm the diagnosis and prognosis, and there are several built-in safeguards to prevent abuse, including a 15-day waiting period between requests and a requirement for the patient to administer the medication to themselves. This act reflects a growing movement in the United States towards allowing individuals greater control over their end-of-life decisions.

PATIENT ADMISSION

The admitting policy for patients of HRH Community Hospital: Hospital services shall be made available to all persons, without prejudice, and shall be limited only by bed availability. The admission of patients when there are limited beds available in the community shall be based on a system that gives priority to critically ill patients.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all patients and visitors of Harbor Regional Health Community Hospital (HRHCH) are treated with equality, in a welcoming, nondiscriminatory manner, consistent with applicable state and federal law.
